Best Things to See Near Blue Lagoon

Not sure if a trip to Blue Lagoon is worth it? Think again.

Being only 20 minutes from Keflavik Airport, Iceland’s international airport, Blue Lagoon is the perfect location for pre or post-flight relaxation. Nestled amidst stark volcanic terrain, this geothermal oasis offers much more than its famed milky-blue waters.

Let’s dive into why you should make a day trip out of the Blue Lagoon and explore the enchanting sights nearby!

Blue Lagoon

Maybe it was the jet lag or the stiffness in my legs after a long flight, but a relaxing dip in Blue Lagoon‘s hot, mineral-rich waters was exactly what I needed when I landed.

The warm geothermal pools are not only therapeutic but also an otherworldly experience. As you float amid the steam, with a calming silica mud mask plastered on your skin, you’ll feel your worries melt away, leaving you refreshed, invigorated, and ready for your Icelandic adventures!

Bridge Between Two Continents

Before heading into Reykjavik or flying out of Iceland, don’t miss the chance to cross the symbolic Bridge Between Continents. This footbridge straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, marking the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Beyond being an amazing example of Iceland’s wonderful black sand and volcanic rock, it’s also a tangible reminder of the country’s geological uniqueness.

This was actually our first stop once we arrived in Iceland and picked up our car. We saw a parking lot filled with cars alongside the road and, having time before our scheduled slot at Blue Lagoon, were like, “Shall we?”. I’m so glad we did because the black sand and mental reminder that we were walking across tectonic plates was such a quintessential Icelandic experience; what a great way to start the trip!

Gunnuhver Hot Springs and Reykjanesviti

Reykjanesviti

Gunnuhver Hot Springs is a geothermal wonderland that showcases bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and a captivating landscape that includes Reykjanesviti, Iceland’s oldest lighthouse.

A truly stunning site, the area also contains history too. The area around the hot springs and lighthouse is collectively named Gunnuhver after a female ghost. According to traditional lore, 400 years ago she had caused a great disturbance and fell into the spring when after a priest tricked her.

This hot spring was honestly so impressive and I was surprised that it wasn’t on more itinerarys of must-see attractions in Iceland. Compared to the hot springs near Geysir, this was comparably as impressive, in my opinion, as the sheer scale of the plume of steam was quite a sight!

Brimketill Lava Rock Pool

This natural wonder is nestled along Iceland’s rugged coastline and is a true hidden gem that epitomizes the country’s unique beauty. Carved by the forces of nature, this natural rock pool is the perfect place to see ultra-blue waters and watch waves crash with such force that they spray water high into the air. (It’s a great photo spot too!)

All within a ~20 minute drive from one another, we visited these spots before heading to Blue Lagoon and I must say, they were an amazing start to our trip!
