7 Most Unforgettable Experiences in Iceland

Iceland, often referred to as the “Land of Fire and Ice,” is a place that captivates the imagination with its stunning landscapes, geothermal wonders, and unique culture. From cascading waterfalls to majestic glaciers, this island offers a plethora of unforgettable experiences for travelers seeking adventure, natural beauty, and cultural immersion.

Here are seven must-do activities that will make your trip to Iceland truly unforgettable!

Snorkeling Between Tectonic Plates

Dive into a realm of unparalleled wonder by snorkeling between tectonic plates in Iceland and immerse yourself in the crystal-clear waters of Silfra to experience the astonishing beauty of two continents meeting beneath the surface.

Visibility stretches over 100 meters as these glacial waters have been dubbed the “clearest water on Earth”. Initially, I thought I would be freaked out by the depths of the water but as it is so clear, this are no dark and murky areas where your brain can imagine a creature lurking (my brain would definitely run wild and imagine a shark if there was any sort of mystery LOL).

Overall, snorkeling here is a truly unforgettable experience and not a thing to miss!

Running Behind Waterfalls

Are you daring enough to chase the end of a rainbow behind a waterfall? This is truly one of the most magical and whimsical experiences you can have in Iceland!

It is such an exhilarating rush to step into the heart of cascading wonder like Seljalandsfoss, where the thundering waters spray surround you as you take in once-in-a-lifetime views!

Sea Kayaking in Stykkisholmur

Embark on an unforgettable aquatic journey in Stykkisholmur, Iceland, as you explore the rugged beauty of its coastline through sea kayaking. Paddle along crystal-clear waters, weave through enchanting rock formations, and puffin spot from the comfort of your kayak! We were lucky enough to see puffins fishing in the distance and other seabirds swoop down by the water too!

With panoramic views of the mountains and an amazing opportunity to bird-watch, sea kayaking in Stykkisholmur offers a unique and immersive way to experience the untamed wonders of Iceland’s coastal landscapes.

Hiking a Glacier

Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in Iceland by hiking a glacier! Traverse breathtaking landscapes of ice and snow, witness stunning ice formations, and feel the thrill of conquering the GIANT block of ice beneath your feet.

Guided glacier hikes offer a unique perspective on the country’s geological wonders, an exhilarating and humbling experience that can’t be missed! We absolutely loved our tour on the glacier and were surprised by how humbling it feels to stand on a sheet of ice that could be up to 1,000 feet thick.

Relaxing in Blue Lagoon

At Blue Lagoon, immerse yourself in mineral-rich, milky blue waters while being surrounded by breathtaking volcanic landscapes. Truly a spa experience like no other, relaxing at Blue Lagoon with a face mask slathered on your skin and green juice in hand, you’ll feel so relaxed that the unreal landscapes will look even more majestic!

Being nearby the international Keflavik airport, a trip here will soothe your senses and leave you refreshed like never before after a long flight.

Also make sure to see the sites surrounding this lagoon as they are not to be missed too!

Hiking Near Skogafoss

With so many highlights from our trip to Iceland, it was hard to pick a favorite but if I had to, it would be this. The hike behind the iconic and towering Skogafoss was unimaginably gorgeous!

As you hike through the rugged landscapes, you’ll witness the raw power of countless cascading water, breathe in the purest air, and feel the need to stop every couple of minutes to watch the nearby sheep. Surprisingly not crowded, you get the chance to experience Iceland’s beautiful and healing landscapes more intimately- a really special moment.

Puffin Watching on a Black Sand Beach

Anyone else think puffins are simply the cutest?! I always thought of them as winter toucans and in Iceland, you can witness these charismatic birds with their vibrant beaks and charming antics, set against the dramatic backdrop of the unique black sand shoreline.

This unforgettable encounter with these adorable seabirds amidst the captivating landscape will leave you with such fond memories. Watching groups of puffins fly off the cliffs near Reynisfjara Beach was such a cherished memory and something photos simply cannot capture.

This is merely the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended) for what Iceland has to offer so, pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready to create memories that will last a lifetime in this mesmerizing country!
