Best Things to Snack On in Iceland

Iceland may be known for its stunning landscapes and unique wildlife, but it’s also a hidden treasure when it comes to snacks and treats. From local snacks like their special rye bread ice cream to more universally delicious bites like croissants, here are some of the best things to snack on during your visit to this Nordic wonderland.

  1. Rye Bread and Rye Bread Ice Cream
  2. Snúður (Chocolate Covered Cinnamon Rolls)
  3. Kleiner (Traditional Twisted Donut)
  4. Pylsur (Hot Dogs)
  5. Croissants and Pastries
  6. Matarkex (Digestive Crackers)
  7. Tom & Jerry Kex (Graham Crackers)
  8. Gullon Mini Fish Crackers

Rye Bread and Rye Bread Ice Cream

Iceland is famous for its dense, dark rye bread. Trust me when I say this is unlike any bread you’ve had. It’s chewy and has an almost caramel-like taste, so delicious!

You can find it in restaurants and in most grocery stores. We got several loaves from Bonus.

Because their rye bread is such a staple, you’ll find this classic ingredient in many dishes. One delightful twist is rye bread ice cream! This dessert combines the sweet and creamy goodness of ice cream with the earthy, slightly sweet taste of rye bread crumbs. It’s an unusual but delectable treat that captures the essence of Icelandic cuisine.

This is served at restaurants and ice cream stores alike. We tried it at Valdi’s, a popular Icelandic ice cream shop!

Snúður (Chocolate Covered Cinnamon Rolls)

These irresistible cinnamon rolls, with their soft, doughy texture and generous swirls of cinnamon and sugar, offer a taste of authentic Icelandic comfort and are truly delightful! They are slathered in chocolate and literally mean “twist”.

These are for sure a “must try” and we got ours at Geirabakarí Kaffihús, a cafe with a gorgeous view on our way to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

Kleiner (Traditional Twisted Donut)

Kleiner, also known as kleinur, is another Icelandic staple. These are traditional Icelandic doughnuts that are deep-fried pastries that are often twisted into intricate shapes and dusted with powdered sugar. They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, making them a delightful snack!

Kleiner can be found at local bakeries and cafes but we got a bag of them from Bonus! (They made a delicious road trip snack.)

Pylsur (Hot Dogs)

In Iceland, savoring a hot dog is a must-do culinary experience! These aren’t your average franks; Icelandic hot dogs, or “pylsur,” are crafted from a tantalizing blend of lamb and pork, resulting in a flavor that’s uniquely delicious. Topped with crispy onions, remoulade sauce, and sweet mustard, they offer a taste of local tradition that’s simply irresistible.

They surely offer a different taste than regular hot dogs so make sure to try one!

Croissants and Pastries

While not originally Icelandic, the croissants you’ll find here are nothing short of amazing. Icelandic bakers have mastered the art of crafting flaky, buttery croissants that are perfect for breakfast or a quick snack. Pair one with a hot cup of coffee, and you’ll understand why this fusion of French and Icelandic flavors is so beloved.

We tried croissants and pastries at Te & Kaffi and Brauð & Co, both of which have several locations across Iceland.

I loved the hindberjastykki, a croissant with raspberrys, crumble, and vanilla cream, at Brauð & Co.

Grocery Store Snacks

Matarkex (Digestive Crackers)

These digestive crackers were the first road trip snack we picked up from Bonus and wow, how tasty! They essentially tasted exactly like animal crackers and are subtly sweet with a light, nutty taste with undertones of vanilla.

Tom & Jerry Kex (Graham Crackers)

These tiny graham cracker-like cookies are from Göteborgs Kex and are in the shape of Tom and Jerry characters. They are made from a vanilla-flavored shortcrust pastry and make an excellent road trip snack!

Gullon Mini Fish Crackers

These Goldfish-lookalike crackers surprised us by tasting exactly like Ritz Crackers. Buttery, flaky, and slightly salty, they made a great snack!

Iceland’s snack scene is a delightful blend of traditional flavors and international influences. Whether you’re road-tripping through the countryside or strolling through Reykjavik’s charming streets, these snacks will surely keep your taste buds entertained!
